How to know what you really want

It's one of the hardest questions. Not because the answer is complicated, but because we've piled up so many expectations, so many "shoulds" and other people's opinions that we can't hear ourselves anymore. Here's how to sort through it.

Separate what you want from what you were taught to want

A good part of what we think we want doesn't come from us. It comes from our parents, our friends, social media, from an idea of "success" we absorbed without choosing it. Work, relationships, the pace of life: we tick boxes without always asking whether we wrote them ourselves.

For each wish, ask yourself: do I want this, or do I want what it means in other people's eyes? That difference changes everything.

Notice what lights you up and what drains you

You don't need a big revelation. Just look back over the last few weeks at the moments you felt alive, in your place, time flying. And the ones where you felt switched off, forcing yourself.

Your feelings are a more reliable compass than your reasoning. What fills you up points to what you want. What drains you, even when it's "supposed" to be good, deserves a closer look.

Ask yourself the right questions

Instead of the crushing "what do I want to do with my life", start smaller and more honest.

  • What do I want more of in my life? Less of?
  • What would I do if other people's opinions didn't count?
  • What am I not letting myself want, and why?

Accept that you won't know everything at once

You don't have to know your whole life in advance. Knowing what you want isn't a flash of genius, it's a path. You discover it by trying, getting it wrong, adjusting.

What matters most is taking the next step in a direction that feels like you, even a small one. Clarity doesn't come before action: often, it comes as you walk.

The questions people often ask

Why don't I know what I want?

Often because you learned to listen to other people's expectations more than your own. Over time, your own voice gets quieter. It's not that you have no wishes: it's that they're buried under everything you were told you should want.

How do I find my way when I feel lost?

Start by noticing what gives you energy and what takes it, without judging. Try things on a small scale rather than waiting for certainty. The way becomes clearer as you move, not while you think standing still.

Is it normal to change my mind about what I want?

Completely. Your wishes grow with you, and that's healthy. Wanting something different today than yesterday isn't instability, it's a sign you're getting to know yourself better. Being consistent doesn't mean never changing, it means staying true to yourself.
